COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS #5 – Soothing Facial Masks!

Here are some awesome , homemade facial masks for you all to try this holiday season. Just leave it on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with warm water. Your skin will be flawless!

Oatmeal and Yogurt Face Mask:

This is perfect for all skin types and will leave your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Prep time:

3 minutes

Ingredients:

1 tbsp oatmeal, finely ground

1 tbsp live, organic yogurt (skip the flavored stuff)

A few drops of honey

Apply mask to the face, leave on for 10 minutes, rinse with warm water, and follow with a warm washcloth. Finish with a moisturizer.

Skin Brightening Turmeric Face Mask:

Turmeric is a bright yellow spice used in many Indian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern dishes. When combined with yogurt, milk or olive oil, it’s an amazing face mask. Indian women use it as a skin brightener.

Warning: turmeric can stain fair skin. As is makes yellow and dark skin glow, it can make lighter skin look orangey. However, the stain goes away after a few hours.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp flour (used to thicken paste)

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

For oily skin: 1/4 cup plain yogurt & a few drops of lemon juice

For dry skin: 2 tbsp olive oil, almond oil, or coconut oil

A few drops of honey

Preparation:

Mix the flour and turmeric together.

If you have oily skin:

Add the lemon juice and stir. Slowly mix in the yogurt until a creamy paste is formed. Use more or less yogurt to your liking.

If you have dry skin:

Add the oil slowly and stir until a paste is formed. Add more for creaminess.

Apply mask to face and neck.

Leave on for 15-20 minutes.

Using a warm, wet washcloth that you don’t mind staining (turmeric will stain) rinse of the mask.

Banana Mask for Oily Skin:

This is a soothing face mask, and excellent if you happen to have bananas around the house.

Ingredients:

1 banana preferably ripe (you can keep the bananas in the freezer. Let it thaw before using)

2 tbsp honey

An orange or a lemon

Preparation:

Mash up the banana, then mix in the honey. For best results, put the ingredients in a blender.

Add a few drops of juice from an orange or lemon.

Apply to face for 15 minutes before rinsing with a cool washcloth or s steaming warm washcloth.

Follow with your regular moisturizer.

Strawberry Acne Mask:

Don’t waste money on acne products, use strawberries. Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid which are found in most acne products. This recipe comes from Janice Cox, the author of Natural Beauty at Home. The yogurt is great for softening the skin.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup of strawberries (fresh, not frozen please)

1/4 cup sour cream or non-flavored yogurt

Preparation:

Let both the strawberries and the yogurt come to room temperature (or close).

Put the strawberries and yogurt in a blender to combine or mash together the strawberries and yogurt with a fork (the blender works best).

Spread on face and wash after 10-15 minutes.

Green Clay Mask for Oily Skin:

A green clay mask is the best kind of clay mask. It is a purifying mask, and works best for oily skin. You can buy the ingredients at any natural food store or online.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp green clay

1 tsp apricot kernel oil

3 drops of palmarosa essential oil

Preparation:

Mix the palmarosa and apricot oils together.

Add a few drops of warm water.

Mix together and add more water if need be, to get a good, spreadable paste.

Apply mask.

Let dry for 10 minutes.

Rinse off with a warm washcloth.

Avocado Face Mask for Dry Skin:

This a classic recipe that only involves two ingredients: avocados and honey which are very moisturizing. The mask works well on mature, wrinkled, and dry skin. It’s best to use ripe, fresh, organic avocados. Make sure to mash the avocado into a creamy pulp.

Ingredients:

1/2 very ripe, soft avocado

1/4 cup honey

Preparation:

Mash the avocado in a bowl, the stir in honey.

Apply to skin and leave for 10 minutes.

Rinse face with a cool washcloth.

Brown Sugar Scrub for the Face:

Brown sugar is a natural exfoliant and works for all skin types. This recipe is suggested by Lena Korres, the founder of Korees Natural Products, and makeup artist Jemima Kidd, in Cosmopolitan magazine. They recommend getting rid of chapped lips by mixing brown sugar with honey and massaging into the lips.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp (more or less, add drops if you need them) of olive oil or extra virgin coconut oil

Preparation:

Put the brown sugar in your palm.

Add the olive or coconut oil.

Stir in your palm with your finger, creating a paste. Add more or less as needed.

Massage into skin in a circular motion.

Rinse off with warm water.

Press a warm washcloth into the face.

Apply moisturizer.

Aloe Vera & Avocado DIY Mask for Dry Skin:

This great facial mask can hydrate and soften dry skin. The main ingredients are aloe vera gel, avocado, and honey.

Aloe vera gel is well known for it’s healing proprieties which makes this an excellent mask for wind-burned or sunburned skin.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp aloe vera gel

1/2 ripe avocado

1 tbsp runny honey (heat it a few seconds in the microwave to make it runny)

1 tsp almond or coconut oil

1 1/2 tbsp dry oatmeal (the real stuff, not instant)

Preparation:

Cut up the avocado into pieces, then mash it in a bowl with a fork, creating a smooth paste without lumps.

Add the aloe vera gel, runny honey, coconut oil, and oatmeal. Mix together.

Apply the mask to freshly washed skin and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes.

Rinse with lukewarm waster and a warm washcloth.

Apply moisturizer.
